Do you coach what people do vs why they do it? Your not alone…

It is so interesting when you review tactical job based coaching, I am lucky enough to do this all the time!  What is so interesting when you really listen to what is going on, to often I see people that are being coached simply going along with whatever they are being asked, or sometimes pushing back and disagreeing with the coach.

You might have noticed this yourself?  In our busy lives and with a focus on getting things done, I think we focus to much on solution or skill based coaching, for example, what you did was, have you tried this, others in your role do this, do it this way and so on….

We often then become frustrated as nothing changes and they don’t do  the things you talked about!

Next time your in this situation, try Why based coaching.  What does this mean?  Well all I mean is try asking them why they do what they do, then connect to what actually happened and finally ask is this what you wanted to happen?

often at that point people will say no, that isn’t what I expected.  Now you can move to what needs to change and you will often find you have so much more buy in as they have worked it out for themselves!  Come on we all believe what we say and to often we don’t believe others.

Just try it you never know you might just get a different outcome for yourself 🙂
